How would you cast a film remake of Les Miserables (as a musical)?

I watched the opera on TV several years ago. I thought I was going to like it. But, I was Completely Bored Out Of My Mind with it. I created a vision in my mind of something completely different, when I heard sections of the soundtrack. It would have to go Avant Guard to work with me. I see: David Bowie, Tom Waites, Macy Gray, Sinead O'conner, Snoop Dog, and the Pixies.
