How do I bleach my hair with hydrogen peroxide?

I want to put coon stripes in my hair, but I don't want to ruin it. All I have is hydrogen peroxide and bleach, but I heard that will ruin your hair. Is that only true if you do your whole head? If not, what solution of water and peroxide/bleach should I use for brown hair? Is there anyway I can get them noticeable in one day or does it take weeks like I've heard?
